Habits to Serve YOU
Hello again readers. I’m sure we have all created or even inherited some bad habits along the way... Research from a hallmark study in 2009 shows that it can take between 18 to 254 days; so, starting sooner rather than later is going to get those habits serving your needs.
Changing the habits of a lifetime isn’t always easy. It’s not just about what you do but what you say in your mind. Your inner script (better know as, your subconscious mind) works with you to support your self-talk.
Identifying the habits that need to change and finding a system that works for you, will make the process easier. Then it’s just PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!
Here are a few habits that I’ve changed to better serve me.
👉 learn to say NO
I was a people pleaser. I wanted to help everyone and I wanted to be liked for doing it. The strategies I use are:
a) reply with, “I’ll check my diary and get back to you”
b) "Thank you for asking me. Right now I’m unable to fit that in, but do let me know how it goes."
👉 protect your time and use it wisely
Social media and online games have a lot to answer for. I used the excuse that the games calmed me down and gave me a bit of me time… then 3 hours later and a few more levels passed and I was behind on my work.
My change? I deleted the games; I took temptation away; yes I missed them for a couple of days, but that soon passed. Plan your diary, do it in hourly sections if you need to, but always plan your downtime in first.
👉 never stop learning
Your own development is important. To get that promotion, to build your confidence, to change direction… knowledge and passion are paramount.
Enrol with an online educator. I use New Skills, it’s affordable, can be done in your own time and keeps your brain active. Join a group in your local area that will give you an insight into what’s happening in your local community.
👉 create a great routine for sleep
Adequate and regular sleep is vital to our health. Picture this: Decision made to go to bed at 10pm, usual routine completed and the statement “I’ll just…” crops into your head. Then the phone or the iPad is still in your hands an hour later. The last thing you need before sleep is more mental stimulation.
Setting your phone on 'Do not disturb' will prevent disturbance. Having a cut-off time and sticking to it or ditch it, leave it in another room and use some other form of alarm system to wake you up.
The good news is that habits can serve us and they can change. There is never a better time to start than right now.
Take care, Dawn
